Best Games Of 2012-13: No. 15-No. 11
No. 15: Carolina 10, Maryland 8 - Men's Lacrosse, March 23, 2013
In a season that threatened to lose momentum several times early, this was the game that sparked the 2013 men's lacrosse team to great heights. Buoyed by a goalkeeping performance for the ages by freshman Kieran Burke, the Tar Heels stunned No. 1 Maryland at Byrd Stadium in College Park, 10-8. Joey Sankey's four goals helped UNC storm ahead 9-3, but it was Burke's 15 saves - six of which came in the fourth quarter - that allowed Carolina to knock off the Terps and recharge what would be a season to remember.
No. 14: Carolina 79, Maryland 76 - Men's Basketball, March 16, 2013
Everyone in Greensboro and throughout ACC country expected this to be round three of the Carolina-Duke series. But after Maryland stunned the Blue Devils in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, it was the Terps on the opposite bench for semifinal Saturday. UNC led throughout, but Maryland had pulled within three late in the game before Marcus Paige's floater over seven-footer Alex Len effectively sealed it. P.J. Hairston had 13 points despite receiving eight stitches in his hand from a gruesome injury the night before.
No. 13: Carolina 2, Duke 1 (OT) - Men's Soccer, Sept. 28, 2012
A struggling Duke side entered this rivalry game just 3-4-1, but after a 59th minute Riley Wolfe goal, the Blue Devils threatened to upset the sixth-ranked Tar Heels. Cameron Brown scored his first goal since 2009 in the 87th minute, however, and Carolina won it just two minutes into overtime courtesy of a Jordan Gafa blast from outside the penalty area.
No. 12: Carolina 3, Wisconsin 2 (8 inn.) - Softball, May 16, 2013
The Carolina softball team was placed in one of the NCAA Championship's most difficult regionals when the Tar Heels were shipped to Eugene, Ore., to face No. 25 Wisconsin in the tournament opener. Junior pitcher Lori Spingola was stellar in the circle for UNC, striking out eight while allowing just one earned run. Kristen Brown drove in the eventual winning run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
No. 11: Carolina 3, Florida State 1 - Volleyball, Nov. 3, 2012
Carolina capped one of the greatest weekend performances in recent program history with this four-set win over 11th-ranked and 2011 national semifinalist Florida State. One night after sweeping No. 23 Miami, the Tar Heels took down the Seminoles behind senior Emily McGee's double-double of 13 kills and 16 digs. UNC dropped the opening set before taking the last three in what head coach Joe Sagula called "a win for the entire program."
