Tar Heel Rundown: August 29
Twenty years ago today, Carolina went into a hostile environment and beat a favored opponent, setting up the program's step forward into national awareness. Highlights of the 1993 win over Southern Cal:
If nothing else, go to the 1:05 mark and watch 5-foot-10, 165-pound wide receiver Marcus Wall (owner of one of the best UNC football nicknames ever, "Super Gnat") truck 6-foot-1, 210-pound USC defensive back Mike Salmon. More on this game is coming today on GoHeels.
Love the first Blake Anderson quote in this video on what he expects from the South Carolina defense: "I expect 11 guys who can fly to the football and be genuinely (ticked) off when they get there." It also includes defensive coordinator Vic Koenning's insight on the Gamecock offense.
Tonight's game captains are Bryn Renner, Jabari Price, Tim Jackson, James Hurst and Kendrick Singleton...Some relatively good-humored advice to UNC fans from the Gamecock perspective...This is what the Carolina-South Carolina football game program looked like in 1949 (it cost 35 cents)...Per the always-informative Twitter feed of equipment manager Jason Freeman, it looks like the Tar Heels will be in blue helmets and white jerseys tonight...Status of South Carolina WR Bruce Ellington will be determined during pregame warmups and Gamecock receivers would be young without him...If you're going to the game, here's a handy guide to game day in Columbia...A tidbit from Lee Pace's excellent history of the Carolina-South Carolina series--the Tar Heels once wore orange jerseys against the Gamecocks...One of seven CBS football writers likes the Tar Heels tonight...Forecast for 6 p.m. in Columbia: 91 degrees, feels like 99.
Don't miss Adam Lucas' season analysis of sophomore big man Joel James...The Clippers introduced Antawn Jamison and had comprehensive quotes, video and photos...Interesting shot chart here of Jamison's production last year--looks quite a bit different from his time at UNC, huh?...This headline will take some getting used to: can Syracuse win the ACC (some UNC content also).
Volleyball gets started this weekend, and here's a video preview of the trip to Murfreesboro:
Football: Carolina at South Carolina, 6 p.m., ESPN. The Tar Heel Sports Network has a special two-hour pregame show.
Tar Heels in the NFL
Saints beat writer projects Kevin Reddick to make roster of 53 as undrafted free agent, but he's definitely on the bubble going into exhibition game tonight...This isn't the NFL, but bet you didn't know that Darian Durant has 17 touchdown passes and zero interceptions for Saskatchewan in the CFL.
No long read today, because you're too amped to sit and read on gameday. But we do have a "long listen," as here's Andy Griffith's "What it was was football." If you're a Carolina fan of a certain age, your dad could quote this verbatim. Or you might even be the dad who could quote it verbatim. The joke, in case you're new to this, is that it's Andy's first time at a college football game.
That's your official dose of North Carolina history right there.
Ready for the game yet? You're about to be. Watch this:
