No. 1 Men's Soccer Draws At Virginia Tech
North Carolina (3-0-3, 0-0-3 ACC) went to overtime for the fifth time in six matches this season, but ended in a scoreless draw for the first time in 2013.
The Tar Heels had two really good chances to win the match in extra time, one coming in each of the overtime sessions.
In the 97th minute, Tyler Engel did well to time a one-hopped floating cross from Holness and he put a strong strike on the ball that was pushed to the side by Tech keeper Kyle Renfro.
Engel was penetrating the Hokie defense again in the second extra session. This time he tried to chip the goalie in the 103rd minute, but Renfro got a glove on the shot attempt.
It appeared the Virginia Tech had the game won when Robert Alberti had a clear look on net in the second overtime, but he sent his shot inches over the cross bar as Moore sprawled to get a mitt on the ball.
The junior net minder came up with two saves to earn a second-consecutive clean sheet and fourth of the season. He hasn't allowed a goal since late in the first half against Maryland last Friday night, a span of 279:56.
Right out of the gate in the second half, Tech had two really good opportunities to break through with the first goal of the match.
In the 47th minute, Moore came up with another solid save on a shot by the Hokies' Andre Thomas.
The ensuing corner kick wound up trickling right through the goal box, but the Heels survived the threat with no harm done.
Moments later, Tar Heel Omar Holness fired a shot from distance but it whistled just over the cross bar in the 49th minute.
The UNC defense clamped down and only allowed three shots the entire second half. However, the offense wasn't able to come up with a goal either as the match went into extra time, the fourth-straight overtime contest for the Heels.
