Hairston And McDonald Out Friday
A Carolina spokesman said Thursday afternoon that Leslie McDonald and P.J. Hairston will not play Friday night in the season opener against Oakland.
The update was part of Roy Williams' regular pregame media session at the Smith Center. According to senior associate athletic director for athletic communications Steve Kirschner, "It's an ongoing compliance issue."
"It's frustrating but it's a long process," Williams said. "We're trying to do what we can do and the NCAA is trying to do what they can do."
McDonald is the lone scholarship senior on the roster this season, and Hairston was Carolina's leading scorer as a sophomore, when he averaged 14.6 points per game. Hairston was suspended from the team indefinitely on July 28, but earned the right to practice on Sept. 26.
Williams said McDonald and Hairston have been practicing with the team as they await a resolution fo their situation.
"They've been practicing and they've been practicing really well," Williams said. "The last week I haven't had them on the first team at any point. I've had them on the blue team. P.J. has played about as well at this point in the season as any player I've ever had."
Carolina opens the 2013-14 season against Oakland on Friday night at 9 p.m. Tickets are available.
