Three Tar Heels On PFW All-America Team

Three Tar Heels On PFW All-America Team

North Carolina offensive guard Jonathan Cooper, defensive tackle Sylvester Williams and running back/specialist Giovani Bernard have landed a spot on Pro Football Weekly's All-America team.

Cooper, a native of Wilmington, N.C., added to his collection of All-America honors.  He has earned first-team honors from virtually every media organization and will be included in Carolina's honored jerseys hanging in Kenan Stadium.

Williams played two seasons at Carolina after transferring from Coffeyville Community College in Kansas.  He had an outstanding season with 42 tackles, 13.5 tackles for losses of 50 yards, six sacks and six quarterback pressures.  A first-team All-ACC pick, Williams started all 25 games during his Carolina career.

Bernard was an honorable-mention pick as a specialist.  Bernard led the nation in punt return average, and scored one of the most memorable touchdowns in UNC history on a 74-yard punt return vs. NC State.  A first-team All-ACC pick, Bernard is fourth in the nation in all-purpose yards, fifth in scoring and 11th in rushing.

The PFW team is chosen by by draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki.  PFW's All-America team annually honors college football's most talented players and is determined based on extensive evaluation and considerable feedback from NFL evaluators, taking into consideration how players grade out both in their assignments and by the quality of critical playing traits. PFW honors are distinguished by the premium placed on skill, football temperament and instincts and seek to recognize players we expect will become outstanding pros. Players are expected to have contributed for the bulk of the season to qualify. Production is considered, but not weighed nearly as heavily as how much of an impact players make on their teams. Extra attention is paid to traits such as toughness, intelligence and competitiveness, all traits that we believe correlate heavily to future NFL success.

The All-America team can be found in the current edition of Pro Football Weekly (Vol. XXVII, No. 19, issue date Dec. 16, 2012), which is available online. Additional draft-related content can be found at ProFootballWeekly.com.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Juniors are marked by one asterisk (*), draft-eligible sophomores have two (**) and true sophomores have three (***).
