Tar Heels Fall To No. 19 FSU, 80-73
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --- Xylina McDaniel scored a career-high 25 points but No. 14 North Carolina fell to No. 19 Florida State, 80-73, Sunday afternoon at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Leonor Rodriguez had 22 for the Seminoles, who snapped UNC's three-game winning streak.
Tierra Ruffin-Pratt had 14 points for the Tar Heels (23-4, 11-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who lost away from Chapel Hill for just the second time in 2013. Waltiea Rolle, who did not start due to illness, came off the bench to add 14 points and seven boards.
Florida State (20-5, 10-4 ACC) led by three at the break before a 7-1 run fueled by McDaniel gave Carolina its biggest lead of the day at 41-38. But the Seminoles responded with a 7-0 run of their own and never trailed again.
FSU led by as many as 14 with 6:50 to go before Ruffin-Pratt sparked a run that got the Tar Heels within six at 73-67. Natasha Howard got behind the Carolina defense for a layup on the ensuing possession, however, and the hosts were able to salt the game away at the foul line.
Chelsea Davis had 21 points for the 'Noles, while Howard registered a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards.
Carolina will have four days off before traveling to Blacksburg, Va., to face Virginia Tech on Friday, Feb. 22. That game, which will be televised by the ACC Regional Sports Network, is set to tip at 8:30 p.m.
