Five Tar Heels Named To National Team
Five Tar Heels have been named to the U.S. Women's National Team roster for an upcoming international tournament in Rio de Janeiro. Rachel Dawson, Katelyn Falgowsk, Jackie Kintzer, Kelsey Kolojejchick and Emily Wold are part of the 18-player roster selected by new U.S. coach Craig Parnham.

Dawson, Falgowski and Kintzer are Carolina alums. Kolojejchick finished her UNC playing career with the 2012 season. Wold, the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, will be a sophomore at UNC this fall and will have the opportunity to earn her first international cap during the trip to Brazil. Meanwhile, Dawson, a 2007 graduate and long-time team member, could earn her 200th, a milestone achieved by only a handful of U.S. athletes.

The team will compete at the International Hockey Federation World League Round 2 tournament March 4-10. This will be the first tournament with the U.S. team for Parnham, who was appointed head coach in January. He selected the team based on recent training camps at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., and at Francis E. Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill. The latter was an opportunity for players enrolled in college in the East (and thus unable to travel to California for training camp) to meet and train under Parnham prior to selection.

"I made a deliberate and conscious effort to see all the players in the program, and now that process is complete, I believe we have selected the right squad to represent the U.S. at World League Round 2," said Parnham.

As the No. 10 ranked team in the world, the U.S. received an automatic entry into World League Round 2. The top two teams from the competition will automatically advance to World League Round 3 and become one step closer to qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

The six-team, round robin tournament also features No. 18 Chile, No. 19 Scotland, No. 27 Trinidad & Tobago, No. 50 Uruguay and No. 55 Brazil.

Team USA will face host nation Brazil in the opening match on March 4, followed by Uruguay. Next up the U.S. will face Scotland and Chile before closing out the tournament against Trinidad & Tobago on March 10.
