UNC Sixth In Directors' Cup Standings

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina ranks sixth in the latest Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Division I Standings, announced Wednesday. The Tar Heels gained points in winter competition for finishing 12th in women's swimming, 13th in fencing, 22nd in wrestling, 29th in men's swimming and 52nd in women's track and field.

Stanford currently leads the rankings after top-10 finishes this winter in men's and women's swimming and fencing. Penn State is second after a wrestling title and a third-place finish in fencing. Notre Dame, Michigan and Florida round out the top five.

UNC leads all Atlantic Coast Conference schools in the standings. Three other ACC schools are in the top 20: Florida State seventh, Virginia Tech 18th and Virginia 19th.

Carolina was atop the standings after the fall season, led by a women's soccer championship, a runner-up finish by field hockey and a fifth place finish by men's soccer.

Nine of 15 NCAA winter championships have been completed with the following schools winning titles: Skiing - Colorado; Rifle - West Virginia; Men's indoor track and field - Arkansas; Women's indoor track and field - Oregon; Fencing - Princeton; Women's ice hockey - Minnesota; Women's swimming and diving - Georgia; Men's swimming and diving - Michigan; and Wrestling - Penn State.

UNC finished eighth in the final standings in 2011-12, marking the school's fourth consecutive top-10 finish, the 10th top-10 finish in 11 years and 16th top-10 finish in the 19-year history of the all-sports competition.
